Clean-up can become part of the play\u2014a gentle moment for children to work together, notice one another, and care for the classroom they share.<\/span><\/p>\n As play begins to wind down, Ms. CeCe lowers her voice and slows the rhythm of the room.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cLet\u2019s lower our voices and find our calm.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Then, rather than directing every child, she notices what is already happening:<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cEmma is working with Jack. Thank you, friends.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cSophie and Henry are working together in blocks. Thank you for working together today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Children begin to notice one another, too. One friend carries the blocks. Another finds where they belong. Someone discovers a toy under the table and brings it back to its place.<\/span><\/p>\n Little by little, the room changes.<\/span><\/p>\n The teacher has offered the beginning.<\/span><\/p>\n The children take it from there.<\/span><\/p>\n Working together becomes more than cleaning up.
