Pre-K Healthy Habits Lesson Plan: Creating in the Classroom

A Healthy Habits Circle Time with Ms. CeCe’s “Friends Around the Table” Song

Begin your Healthy Habits Lesson by sharing Daniel Tries A New Food (inspired by Mister Rodgers’ Neighborhood). “Try a new food, it might taste good!” Four-year-old- cardigan-wearing Daniel Tiger is a perfect introduction to centers in the classroom, and Ms. CeCe’s “Friends Around the Table” song. (Sing to the tune of “Do You Know the Muffin Man?”) We’ll make a healthy snack today. You and me. You and me. Friends around the table we’ll be (use children’s first names). First Child’s name, second Child’s name, and third Child’s name. Fourth Child’s name, fifth and sixth Child’s name. (Continue around the circle until all the children have been named.)

In our cooking center we will be measuring, mixing and tasting a healthy snack! You’ll be making pretend muffins at our sensory table. In housekeeping, we’ll be preparing a healthy meal (present collected kitchen items).

Cooking

CeCe’s Healthy Power Up (serves 4-6 children)

  • 4 cups bite-sized pretzels
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1 cup dried cranberries, cherries or apricots
  • 1/2 cup sunflower kernels
  • 1 cup coconut flakes

Place ingredients in separate serving bowls. Children  take turns measuring ingredients using a serving spoon.

Housekeeping

Presented cooking items could include a table cloth, napkins, dishes, utensils and pretend healthy food.

Sensory Table

A sensory table filler for muffin making? Oatmeal (add muffin tins, measuring cups and measuring spoons)!

Gathering Time with Ms. CeCe’s “Friends Leading Around the Circle”

Share Oh, The Things You Can Do That Are Good For You: All About Staying Healthy (Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library) by Tish Rabe. “Taking care of yourself is a good thing to do.” So, let’s get up and move with our friends!  Sing  Ms. CeCe’s “Friends Leading Around the Circle” (sing to tune of Muffin Man). Friends around the circle we’ll be (child’s first name) take the lead (child’s first name) take the lead. (Child’s first name) leading around the circle, (child’s first name) leading around the circle. Friends around the circle, (next child’s first name) take the lead. (Movement game continues until all children have a turn to lead.)
